GSM (2G) HSPA (3G) 1900 MHz Network Update
As of August 1, 2025, the 3G (HSPA) network will be officially retired. Canadian wireless carriers are in the process of shutting down their legacy GSM (2G) and HSPA (3G) networks. As a result, any device relying on these older technologies eventually will no longer function on any major Canadian network.
What This Means for You:
Devices that are not compatible with newer network technologies may experience:
- Degraded voice and text services
- No or significantly slower data
What You Need to Do:
- Check your device’s IMEI to see if it operates on GSM (2G) or HSPA (3G) networks.
- If your phone is not compatible, you will need to upgrade to an unlocked 4G LTE device that supports:
- LTE Bands: 2, 4, 7, and 66
- VoLTE (Voice over LTE) capability
Looking Ahead:
We are preparing for a future network migration, and additional details will be shared soon. This transition will deliver:
- Greater network coverage
- Enhanced service value
BlackBerry Update:
BlackBerry has announced that they will be decommissioning legacy BlackBerry software versions on January 4, 2022.
- What does this mean: Customers using Legacy software versions and devices after January 4, 2022 will no longer have reliable voice, data, text messaging and 9-1-1 functionality.
These devices will lack the ability to receive over the air provisioning updates and their functionality including data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functionality will no longer be reliable. For those continuing to use their device after Jan 4, 2022, talk, data, text messaging and 9-1-1 functionality will no longer reliably function.
- Which BB software versions will be affected:
• BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier
• BlackBerry 10
• BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier
- Who will be affected: All BlackBerry devices other than Blackberry with Android OS.
- Where can I buy a replacement for my BlackBerry?
How can I upgrade to a new phone?
